Halo 3 released today

Halo 3, the game that was talked about, discussed and debated over many times before it’s release, has finally been released for the Xbox 360. In Singapore, huge crowds of people queued up outsde Suntec City Mall to get their hands on Halo 3 during noon.

So, is this game really that great? We do not really know, but many online and magazine reviewers has given it a score of 8 and above. That can be an interesting feat, but Grand Theft Auto San Andreas had achieved higher review scores back in 2005 when it came out.

Halo 3, being the final game in the series, will tie up loose ends in the storyline of the Halo series. The story arc started in Halo: Combat Evolved, however, is not complete. The events that happens between Halo 2 and Halo 3 will only be addressed in Halo Uprising, a Halo graphic novel, and so far only one has been released. Also, Halo wars, the prequel to Halo: Combat Evolved, has not been released yet, leaving some Halo fans puzzled about the storyline.

Many Halo fan fictions have been written, read and forgotten, but the Halo storyline has yet to be completed. Microsoft should understand that most people that play Halo are gamers, not comic book fans, movie-goers or bookworms. Certain storyline elements are only found in the Halo films, graphic novels and novels, which makes in impossible to understand the series’ storyline by just playing the games.

Besides, the single-player campaign mode in Halo 3 isn’t at all impressive. Without the multiplayer mode, Forge map editor, new “support weapons” and Theather mode, Halo 3 is just all plain bread with the usual arena-style FPS elements that just fails to impress the seasoned gamer.

Perhaps, Halo 3 would appeal more to the casual gamer. Seasoned gamers might welcome Forge, the new weapons and vehicles, improved graphics and Theather mode, but it’ll get all boring once you’ve played through it and got the hang of it. Multiplayer is the only one impressive point of Halo 3, besides Forge.

In a nutshell, Halo 3 had given more than we had expected, but it just fails to impress the seasoned gamer. Halo 3 introduces many new weapons, vehicles and modes, but it didn’t mange to fill up the storyline gaps yet, which is a pity since it will be the last game in the Halo series. The Multiplayer mode of Halo 3, however, didn’t fail to impress the gaming community, as always. Good job with the multiplayer, Bungie, but it didn’t impress me enough for me to grab a copy myself on the launch date itself.
