Is sex and violence media of the era? From books to music to movies and games, you can easily see how much of the world’s popular media and entertainment are made up of content which are sexual and violent in nature. Just to name a few, there is Grand Theft Auto, Manhunt 2 and Saw IV. Besides these, pornography and adult content in films and books has become very evident in recent years.
Well, it seems that people are generally very interested when it comes to media that contains adult, sexual, violent or funny content. While humour mixed with adult content and violence have been used in games or movies, the success of these media vary from very successful to not successful at all.
Nevertheless, many companies love to use sex and violence to promote their songs, music videos, movies, computer games video games and, most recently, websites. Of course, it works. People are interested. It allows large masses of people to be targeted. However, in such an overcrowded market, will it work?
We have seen sexpots like the Spice Girls and The Pussycat Dolls come and go. People were once crazy about them, and there are still many out there who still love them, but they cannot last. Of course, after the initial wave of excitement and craze, the fan base will slowly decrease and the craze will eventually die down and people will go for new crazes.
Although such techniques do not guarantee to last, sex and violence are indeed the media of the century. It is the kind of entertainment that you will continue to see. Rap music, violent video games and adult movies will last for at least twenty years, if not a hundred. Welcome to the millenium, Jack Thompson, you’re late.
