Rockstar Games have just announced Grand Theft Auto: Chinatown Wars for the Nintendo DS, following Take-Two Interactive’s Electronic Entertainment Expo 2008 Media and Business Summit conference announcements. You can visit Kotaku for more coverage on the summit, which we will be putting together a post of it later.

For now, this announcement has come to be quite a surprise to me, for the new Grand Theft Auto game will be “a game that will deliver a rich, fast-paced and intense ‘Grand Theft Auto’ experience that will be truly unique to Nintendo’s handheld platform”. Does this hint at a role-playing strategy game? Perhaps.
“With the use of the DS touch screen, players will navigate their way through the streets as they uncover the truth behind an epic tale of crime and corruption within the Triad crime syndicate, delivering the unprecedented amount of depth that has become a true trademark of the franchise.”
According to Rockstar Games, Grand Theft Auto: Chinatown Wars will also be an entirely original entry into the Grand Theft Auto series, and it will “bring a new level of interactivity to its sprawling open environments”.
It is currently being developed by Rockstar Leeds and Rockstar North, which have been the same developers working on the PSP titles of Grand Theft Auto games, Liberty City Stories and Vice City Stories, with the latter being the developers that have been working on Grand Theft Auto game since Grand Theft Auto III.
In the Nintendo conference, it was also announced that Grand Theft Auto: Chinatown Wars will be a brand new entry set in the same time line as Grand Theft Auto IV in modern-day Liberty City. It might be a role-playing game or have a top-down view, which is most probably suited for the Nintendo DS.
However, it’s still too early to tell, so do keep a look for more updates here on Grand Theft Auto: Chinatown Wars for the Nintendo DS to be released in Winter this year! Also, do check out the rest of our site for more Grand Theft Auto and Video Game news!
